The Doctors of the World struggle to accomplish an improvement of services in informacion, prevention, treatment and support of the permanent citizens as well as the mobile populations of our country.
While, mostly, the sub-saharian countries are the ones that suffer more from this worldspread desease, the lack of access to the suitable and effective cure does not have borders. The high cost of medication, the bureaucracy and the disfunctional mechanisms are the most important obstacles to the free access to appropriate treatment.
At the same time, the HIV/Aids patients in Europe and Greece face equally important difficulties in having access to treatment, according to the competent authorities. ”Ensuring the equal access to medical treatment for everyone is not an act of generosity but justice. The Doctors of the World ask for the most obvious: equality to access to medical prevention and treatment for the people who live in Europe, without discrimination regardless of their nationality or financial state. Health policy should not be led by the immigrant policy.”, declared Mr Nikitas Kanakis, the president of the Administrative Board of Doctors of the World in Greece.
Although Greece is a european country and privileged with excellent quality treatment for HIV/AIDS patients, the free and equal access to the aforementioned treatment as well as the whole range of prevention education and treating services, is not a reality.
Once more, the World HIV/Aids day finds us dealing with questions and facing big challenges. A global problem, that does not acknowledge borders, race, gender, religion or sexual orientation looking urgently for our attention, while millions of people infected from HIV/Aids worldwide do not have access to treatment.
