Global recession, wars and geopolitical developments have massively increased an already underlying migration wave, thus turning Greece into a major entry point for thousands of economic immigrants.
These are desperate, expelled, famished people, ragged beggars, who totally deprived of their dignity lament over their destitution· people whose dream for a better life in Greece has been slashed to bitter fight for survival. Their presence has marred our glossed-over image of a country of social cohesion without marginalized individuals, and it has forced us to discover our own, until then, well-kept secret: our own destitute and despised people. The once far-off, exotic images we used to get a glimpse of in the newscasts, is now the harsh reality in places no further than Omonoia square and Athens’ old Appeals Court, Koumoundourou and Theatre Squares or the ports of Patra and Igoumenitsa.
