– What do we mean by Mental Health? © Alessandro Grassani | Homeless Support Program According to the World Health Organization (2007), Mental Health does not relate merely to absence of mental disease, but also to the overall state of mental health and well-being, within which individuals are able: to realize their full potential; to work productively, to cope effectively with every day challenges; and to contribute to their community. Therefore, particular emphasis is placed upon the functionality of individuals within the community, as well as on individuals’ capacities as members of a group. What is pointed out, in this way, is the fact that individuals are parts of greater social structures and they do not exist in solitude. Consequently, individuals are bound to adopt multiple social roles and to be in constant interaction with other individuals. To a significant extent, mental health depends on the individuals’ personal perceptions of their position in the society, as well as on the way they interact with other individuals.
