Monde

Monde is a small village in Uganda, located 200 km north of the capital city of Kampala. In April of 2009, in response to father Antonis Moutouabe’s invitation, who is the priest of the Christian Orthodox parish of the region, Médecins du Monde of Greece dispatched an investigative mission to Uganda in order to identify and assess the population’s medical needs. Particular emphasis has been laid to the vulnerable group of mothers who are HIV carriers, as well as the to the orphans who live far away from the capital city of Kampala and lack even basic medical support.

Nowadays, Uganda with a population of 30 million people is one of the world’s poorest countries with the average life expectancy being under 50 years. In addition, more than 1.6 million people – that is, 80% of northern Uganda’s population – have been forced to flee their homes and live under deplorable conditions while they are constantly under Lord’s Resistance Army’s (LRA) attacks. Malaria, respiratory infections and diarrhea are the main factors of infant mortality, accounting for 79 infant deaths per 1000 live births. More than 20,000 infants are infected with HIV virus each year, while millions of others are left orphaned by HIV. Half the population does not have access to clean potable water and almost 40% of the citizens remain far under the poverty line.

Since August 2009, MdM have been working on providing equipment, upgrading and utilizing the 600 square meters medical center of Monde to the full. On one hand, the new equipment comprises medical devices suitable for diagnostic tests and the effective treatment of all cases. On the other hand, MdM have taken charge of providing the medical center with personnel of a permanent nurse and a visiting doctor. In addition, volunteer doctors from Greece with their knowledge, contribute significantly by providing medicines and conducting health awareness campaigns on hygiene, disease prevention and the significance of good health.

The primary aim of MdM mission is to support the local Medical Centre with infrastructure works and to upgrade the health care services provided, so that they can cover the needs of as much of the population of the broader area, as possible. The Medical Center of Monde is the only place in a large geographical area where free medical care is provided. Primary beneficiaries are the residents of Monde, i.e. around 900 children who live in the boarding house, while secondary beneficiaries are the people of Luwaro, a population of 400.000 people. Half of the beneficiary population are children under the age of fourteen.

The Bazaar takes place with the support of Médecins du Monde who have been offering their medical services at the village of Monde for the last four years.
