Médecins du Monde Greece express their deep sorrow for the tragic loss of two people due to yesterday’s fire at Moria in the Reception and Identification Center and call the authorities to take all appropriate measures. Descent and safe living conditions for people are beyond and above any EU-Turkey Agreement.

Médecins du Monde – Grèce, express their deep sorrow for the tragic loss of two people, one old woman and her five year old grandchild, and the serious injure of two more as a result of yesterday’s fire at Moria in the Reception and Identification Center (RIC).

The medical team of MdM GR remained until the early hours in the center treating wounded people and helping all those in need. Today, they returned normally within the Center and operate the medical offices of the organization providing full medical and psychosocial support to the population residing in the Center.

Tragic incidents like the aforementioned highlight once again the inadequate living conditions for the people who came to our country as refugees and immigrants.

Informal hosting facilities without operating regulations, unsuitable for winter and with insufficient services for the people living in them. In the islands, due to the EU-Turkey Agreement, thousands of people remain for months in facilities which have long exceeded their capacity.

At the same time sites, the closure of which has been announced for months, continue to operate. The renovation of hosting facilities is extremely slow. Many containers remain empty in several sites, while people continue to live in tents during winter.

We call the authorities to take immediately all the appropriate measures to improve the living and safety conditions in the hosting centers throughout the country and especially on the islands.

In this context, we wish to emphasize that decent and safe living conditions for all people that enter Greece, both for themselves and their families, not only do not relate but are above and beyond any need for maintaining the EU-Turkey Agreement.

In this endeavor, we commit that we will continue to work together with all actors involved to find the necessary solutions.
