Doctors of the World – Greece | We call for an immediate end of the blockade in Gaza and for a facilitated entrance of humanitarian aid

OPEN LETTER FROM DOCTORS OF THE WORLD GREECE

All we, the undersigned, are anxiously watching the dramatic developments in the Gaza Strip. Following the current escalation of hostilities, more than 1.200 persons have been killed. 3 out of 4 are civilians, the majority of whom are women and young children. Hundreds of thousands are injured and it is estimated that the number of the internally displaced persons has reached 130.000.

The long-term blockade by land, air and sea of the Gaza Strip, has led to extreme shortages in basic means of livelihood, such as water, food, medical supplies and fuel.

About 80% of the 1.8 million inhabitants in Gaza are dependent on foreign aid.

Thousands of persons are in immediate need of medication and medical treatment.

Doctors of the World – Greece cannot remain silent.

We call on Israeli and Palestinian authorities and the UN for immediate ceasefire, based on humanitarian grounds, as well as for the continuation of negotiations.

We call on the Israeli authorities and the UN to end the blockade of Gaza and to ensure the entrance of humanitarian assistance in the area.

We ask Israel to respect the safety of healthcare professionals and health facilities, so as to ensure safe access to medical care for all persons in need, as also required by international law.

“All of us, keeping alive in our minds the Hippocratic Oath, we take action in order to offer our assistance to populations affected by natural disasters, massive accidents, epidemics or those who are in war status and furthermore, to anyone who, under any circumstance, suffers physically or mentally.”
