Under the current, unexpected social and economic situation in Greece, impoverishment of several social groups, poverty, unemployment, psychological distress of average and poor families, migration and so on, there has been a significant increase of cases of violence against children.
According to the latest official figures, this past year 28% of the children in Greece have been subjected to abuse. One out of every five children lives below the poverty line.
Children who suffer domestic violence are often victimized at school, they fall victims of exploitation without being able to either comprehend and to realize or to react.
However, the same goes for children who grow up in poverty, deprived of even the essential social goods such as nutrition, health care, books and shelter, who also suffer hardship and they are unable to comprehend why things around them are the way they are.
So, us, who are adults and capable of comprehending the facts, we ought to stand by the side of these children who need our help and support, help them comprehend the situation they are in and provide all possible assistance.
