Médecins du Monde’s partners, supported by the organization, are getting ready to assess the needs of people affected by the earthquake that hit Morocco on September 8 at 11pm (local time) to ensure a medium- and long-term response.

They will do so in the two areas most affected by the earthquake, the provinces of Al-Haouz, the epicenter of the earthquake, and Taroudant. These two areas account for the highest number of victims, both fatalities – the provisional death toll is over 2,900 – and serious injuries.

Particular attention is paid to the most vulnerable: survivors of (sexual) violence, sex workers, drug users, using an intersectional* approach.

Given the widespread destruction of infrastructure and buildings, the field assessment should help speed up the re-establishment of the continuum of care, as well as logistical support.

Finally, Médecins du Monde aims to provide psycho-social support for front-line workers and coaching, particularly in dealing with trauma and gender-based violence.
*This approach takes into account the situation of people who simultaneously suffer several forms of discrimination or exclusion in a society.
