Level I: “Images and Words”
This is more than just a collection of images coming from 18 different city wanderers, it is a challenge to our eyes coming from 18 distinct points of view on life, energy and cityscapes. Nothing can render “objective” truth better than total “subjectivity”. And nothing can come closer to the “whole” truth than a “multifaceted” version of the truth. With faith in the truth of photography having been irrevocably and justly shattered, we can now look at the medium as the ideal tool for that drift between what seems like reality and what seems personal. Those 18 glimpses over our city are nothing less than 18 photographers gazing at themselves. They can therefore reflect nothing less than what they see through the distorting mirror of themselves. Still, these little prisms of subjectivity can compose a sense of reality. Which is already more than we can ask for.
Level II: «λ≤410 nm»
Freedom and restriction can become compatible and interpret feelings, ideas, thoughts and fantasies. Working within their intimate space, with a light limited to a few nanometers of the visible spectrum (max 410 nm), 20 artists make an attempt at a staged privacy transforming it into worlds of fiction. Images that will look mundane in the morning light, can make the shift to the surreal under Black Light, flirting with our imagination and the subconscious. A parallel universe, another reality, a twist of the imagination. The environment and the human figures will switch roles and reality is reflected in a blue fluorescent mirror. Dark is not dark any longer. Threat or liberation? If dust can turn into stars can this light make us a little more optimistic? Times are changing, the city is moving on its course, could it be that the solution is a kind of darkness where not everything looks black?
Photo Group METApolis
METApolis, the Photo Group created in 2009 by Yiannis Yiannakopoulos and Kostas Kourtidis, is seeking its own transformation or meta-evolution of the city and all the bits and pieces that make up itself and its reflection, the METApolis. Level I (introductory) is attended by aspiring photographers taking their first steps and discovering creative photography. Level II (advanced) consists of artists, perennial amateurs, who have been working as a group for the past few years and have been experimenting and discovering aspects of photography under the guidance of their Masters. METApolis is a play between sequential “meta” (post) and self-referential “meta”, it is a journey between the numerous clicks of camera shutters trapping moments, memories (past), illusions (present), dreams (future) in parallel times. METApolis is us…
