A team of MdM visited Halki, carrying out a preventive medical check-up for the residents, with the vital help of AEGEAN.
Médecins du Monde continues to travel to remote areas of Greece where there is a dramatic increase in demand for basic and primary healthcare services, protecting the human right to unhindered access to healthcare for all.
With the help of AEGEAN, a team consisting of an ENT, Cardiologist, Dentist, Pediatrician and Ophthalmologist, apart from providing medical care, offered prevention services, early diagnosis, health information and awareness, as well as referrals to the public health system for the residents of Halki.
“We met again familiar people and new residents who came to be examined. After all, we are no “strangers ” in the island. Each time, however, the warm welcome gives us great pleasure. It is very important that we manage to be there for people in need of care no matter how far away they are, because no distance can be too long when it comes to health care.” said Ms. Hara Tziouvaras, MdM President and member of the team. “Medical and humanitarian assistance in remote areas of Greece is of great importance to the residents, as even for a simple examination multiple obstacles appear. Among others, there are those residents who are unable to move and threrefor receive medical care only when the situation is critical,” she continued.
The planning of medical missions, apart from being an act of essential solidarity, is a chain process with many parties involved, each of which contributes to the effectiveness of each mission. We would like to thank all those who help us to stand by our fellow people.
The mission to Halki was carried out with the support of the Henkel company and the cooperation of the Rhodes Medical Association. We also thank Blue Star Ferries covering part of the cost for transporting the Mobile Medical Unit and AEGEAN for transporting the team to the island.
