Unemployment in July 2011 reached 16.5%, affecting more than 820.000 people, whereas in July 2010 the financial crisis had a dire impact on 607.000 new unemployed. It is estimated that for 2012 Greece will have more than 1 million citizens unemployed, whilst most of them will be living under the poverty line.

The rapid increase of flexible work relations (corresponding to a minimum wage of 440 euros/month) reveals that thousands of workers in the trade and industry sector working full time, will be unable to cope with their current financial obligations. At the same time one might wonder what will the social benefits for these two categories be in the future?

The continuous reductions in wages and pensions, as a result from the suppression of the Collective Work Convention, simultaneously with the ongoing/repeated increases of all kind of taxes (indirect, direct and exceptional) have lead many social groups to barely survive and to live in the verge of poverty.

At the same time, the recantation of the free character of many public social services (eg. the imposition of ticket in the hospitals or the closure of public daycare stations) deprives a large portion of people the access of many public and municipal services.

The vertical reduction of state funding – because of the budgetary cuts – and simultaneously the lack of funding from the private sector – due to the economic crisis – has dramatically decreased the resources which always existed in the disposal of the Doctors of the World. This has been a dire impact to our humanitarian work!

The future’s gloomy prospect of the economy is bound to create new and enormous social problems will only worsen and will not heal in time to come.

For the above mentioned situation Doctors of the World would like to address to society itself!

In these crucial times Doctors of the World have chosen to keep supporting the solidarity movement despite of the massive difficulties and will not give up, nor recede to their efforts. We decided to continue and intensify our actions in order not go give in to the existing social cannibalism that aims to take Greece back to the 50s. Already our polyclinics in Athens, Perama, Thessaloniki and Chania by providing free medical services to thousands of people who are excluded from the National Medical Care System, have strengthen our will and aspirations to promote the nature of solidarity.

The Organisation of Doctors of the World is calling all those who want to support our efforts to show their solidarity to the ones in need.
