In November 2013, MdM bolster their support for this vulnerable population with the opening of the first Dormitory for the Homeless in the heart of Athens, housed in a building, property of Athens Municipality.
This action is carried out as part of NSRF program – Social Structures for Immediate Eradication of Poverty. The ultimate aim of this Action is to provide sufficient support to its beneficiaries so that they are stimulated and encouraged to take upon themselves the improvement of their living conditions.
The Dormitory offers temporary protected shelter/accommodation to 50 homeless individuals per day, along with specialized psycho-social, counseling and support services. At the Dormitory, homeless individuals can rest, have a beverage and a late breakfast snack. They can also find articles of clothing and footwear, and take showers.
We would like to thank the companies below, for supporting the efforts of MdM to get this action off the ground and up until today, so that this program can be carried out in the most efficient way possible. We count on their future support and wish for more companies to join this effort. We would also like to thank Mr Zoulovits and Mr Kembaptzoglou Kyriakos for their generous sponsorships; the management and employees of Novartis and Travel Planet 24 for their voluntary work; Fourlanos Transport Company; all citizens for their contributions; and our Volunteers for their valuable assistance.
…wherever there are people
*According to FENTSA (European Federation of National Organizations Working with the Homeless) (2012) there is severe lack of reliable official statistical data on shelter issues and the homeless population in Greece. Research data indicate that the number of homeless individuals and persons who live in “temporary shelters”, in Athens is around 11.000 (3000 Greek citizens and 8000 foreigners).
