The Kara Tepe refugee camp was set up in 2015 to accommodate the thousands of refugees that were arriving then to Lesvos every day. It was one of the few venues to offer decent living conditions. It soon became a home for the most vulnerable newcomers, a camp that housed families and people with increased protection needs and health problems.

MdM-Greece have offered their services in the facility since its first day of operation. Since 2015, having daily presence within the camp, we have treated literally thousands of patients and have held thousands of medical sessions and meetings of counselling and psychosocial support.

The Kara Tepe refugee camp no longer exists. It was neither suddenly nor violently destroyed like Moria. Its doors closed forever on the basis of a plan. By 30.04 and the last residents will have evacuated the structure. As promised by the ministry, the keys to the site are handed over to the municipal authority, which intends to reuse the site. The first inhabitants have already been transferred to the new temporary camp in Mavrovouni.

We sincerely hope that the mayor will make use of the space for the benefit of the island’s inhabitants, as he has promised.

We, as MdM-Greece, remain in Lesvos, we remain where there are needs, we exist wherever people are”.
