A. began her long journey from Afghanistan, seeking better living conditions for herself and her family far from her country. She arrived in Lesvos from Turkey, having experienced many difficult and dangerous situations throughout her journey.

After the family had settled in the Lesvos RIC, A. visited the MdM team for psychological support. The traumatic events experienced during the trip had created a tense situation within the family. For days she could not sleep, feeling great psychological pressure, while the young boy in the family was also experiencing severe anxiety and outbursts.

The MdM team, along with the medical care, started monitoring A., offering psychological support and empowerment, so that she could adapt to the living conditions in the reception center, and referred the little boy to Medical Volunteers International for his monitoring.

In the following days, and as relations in the family began to recover with the symptoms of severe anxiety subsiding, both parents received instructions on how to manage the child’s outbursts. The MdM team was also able to connect the two parents with organizations that run Greek language courses and arranged for them to participate in the job search event organized by UNHCR.

A. and her family continue to live at the Lesvos RIC, having started to leave behind the difficulties they have experienced so far. The MdM team remains by the side of the family, continuing to provide mental health services, as well as liaising with the other organizations they work with.

The holistic psychosocial support program, implemented by the MdM team in Lesvos, is made possible thanks to the support of Movement on the Ground.
