PRESS RELEASE
How many people have to die before we stop talking about “random
and exceptional incidents” ?
Doctors of the World Greece (DotW) express their deep sorrow about the death -the third in one week- in the Reception and Identification Centre in Moria camp, on Lesvos island. DotW restate their firm position that decent and safe living conditions for people in the camps are far more important than anything within the EU-Turkey Agreement.
Just a few days after the death of two people in the Reception and Identification Centre in Moria Hotspot, on Lesvos island, an eighteen year-old boy was found dead today, while another was transferred to the local hospital.
As DotW Greece, we express our deep sorrow about the death – the third in a single week- in the Reception and Identification Centre in Moria hotspot, on Lesvos island.
Although there is no official statement about the causes of these deaths, each has been connected to heater fumes or other heating mediums improvised by refugees in the camps.
DotW Greece as competent NGO in charge of the provision of primary healthcare services in the Reception and Identification Centre in Moria, we have already publicly highlighted the serious risks concerning the health and even the life of the refugees and migrants temporarily accommodated, due to the difficult living conditions.
As DotW Greece we wish to emphasize that decent and safe living conditions for all people that enter Greece, should be the absolute priority – far above and beyond any need for maintaining the EU-Turkey Agreement.
