A ten-member team of Doctors of the World Greece, consisting of experienced medical and nursing staff (Pathologist, Gerontologist, Pulmonologist, Midwife, Neurologist and Medical Assistant), visited the Diapontia Islands with the Medical Mobile Unit, from the 17th to the 19th of September.
The aim of the mission was to provide medical care, preventive services and information to the people of the islands, while strengthening the operation of local rural clinics. The mission was carried out in cooperation with the Region of the Ionian Islands, the Corfu Medical Association and the assistance of the Coast Guard – Greek Coast Guard, which transported the team to the islands.
The Diapontia Islands are the westernmost point of Greece and are inhabited by a small number of people, most of whom are elderly. At the same time, due to the distance from Corfu, the locals of the islands lack direct access to necessary comprehensive health services.
Doctors of the World stood by the residents of the Ionian Islands, defending once again the human right to accessible health care for all.
