Médecins du Monde continues to offer care to vulnerable social groups, by providing Mental Health and Psychosocial Support services through its Open Polyclinic in Thessaloniki, with the financial support of the Foundation Athina I. Martinou.
MdM’s Open Polyclinic started its operation in Thessaloniki back in 2001 and through its action it strengthens the reduction of discrimination in everyday life and the protection of the rights of vulnerable social groups in the wider region of Central Macedonia.
The donation of the Athena I. Martinou Foundation, for the 12-month coverage of the mental health and psychosocial support services of the Open Polyclinic in Thessaloniki, actively helps Médecins du Monde in: (a) ensuring access to free and quality mental health care services to vulnerable groups; (b) providing the necessary technical information and training to frontline staff in structures in the region and structures related to the provision of mental health services to vulnerable populations in the region; (c) ensuring continuity of care and treatment, including referrals to secondary and tertiary health and social care structures when necessary, and appropriate follow-up of each case; and (d) raising social awareness to improve well-being in the community.
It is worth noting that in the framework of immediate support and care of refugees from Ukraine in Greece, Médecins du Monde has developed a specialized program of psychosocial support services in Thessaloniki, which is a entry point for Ukrainian refugees. In the first six months of the Ukrainian crisis, it is estimated that more than 80,000 Ukrainian refugees fled to Greece, with a significant proportion residing in the wider region of Central Macedonia. Already more than 650 people have received the necessary health and material support services from the staff of the facility.
