Nowadays, pensioners and people over the age of 65 are much more vulnerable to poverty that threatens 20.1% of the Greek population, while at the same time economic recession renders increasingly more senior citizens incapable of meeting their health care and living expenses.
The program “Message of Life”, which is funded entirely by the TIMA Charitable Foundation, is conducted in two levels: prevention and response. The program was developed in the hope of covering the two most pressing needs of the elderly: healthcare services and food assistance.
Conduct of the program is pivoted on four forms of intervention:
1. Medical care and medication: Médecins du Monde Open Clinics of Athens and Perama city provide specialized medical care and medication to the elderly.
2. Vaccination coverage: providing vaccination against seasonal flu for 400 elderly people.
3. Home visits: providing free healthcare at home to at least 100 elderly people.
4. Food-aid packages: offering food-aid packages to at least 100 elderly people a month.
The program has been set up and is being conducted with the view to achieving certain goals set by World Health Organization. European Union is also committed to the very same goals in order to create a social framework within which“…the elderly are not disdained; illnesses are being diagnosed on time; particular attention is devoted to disease prevention and proper care; elderly people’s general well-being is ensured ”. The program will cover the needs of the following groups:
• The elderly with serious health issues
• Unsupported elderly people
• Low-pensioners
• Bed-ridden elderly people
