A ten-member team of MdM, consisting of experienced medical and nursing staff (Pathologist, Gerontologist, Pulmonologist, Midwife, Neurologist and Medical Assistant), visited the Diapontia Islands with the Medical Mobile Unit, from the 17th to the 19th of September.
The aim of the mission was to provide medical care, preventive services and information to the residents of the islands, while strengthening the operation of local rural clinics. The mission was carried out in cooperation with the Region of the Ionian Islands, the Corfu Medical Association and the assistance of the Greek Coast Guard, that transported the team to the islands.
The Diapontia Islands are the westernmost point of Greece and are inhabited by a small number of people, most of whom are elderly. At the same time, due to the distance from Corfu, the population of the islands lacks direct access to necessary comprehensive health services.
The medical intervention of MdM in the Diapontia Islands, was made possible with the financial support of donations collected during the Christmas Gala in December 2021, organized by MdM Ambassador in Corfu, Mrs.Roula Rouvas. With this important help, MdM stood by the side of the people living on the border islands of the Ionian Sea, defending once again the human right to unrestricted access to health care for all.
MdM warmly thanks the Region of the Ionian Islands for the cooperation in the realization of the action, the Greek Coast Guard for the transport of the team to the Diapontia Islands and AEGEAN, the official air transport sponsor of MdM-Greece.
