Open Polyclinics
The Open Polyclinics of Doctors of the World operate with the main goal of providing primary health care as well as social and psychological support to people belonging to vulnerable social groups, such as the homeless, those in need, the uninsured, immigrants, refugees without administrative documents and to any other person with limited or zero access to the National Health System.
The Open Polyclinics of Doctors of the World operate in Athens and Thessaloniki.
Volunteer doctors of almost all specialties, as well as dentists (physicians, pediatricians, surgeons, gynecologists, dermatologists, cardiologists, ophthalmologists, orthopedists, radiologists, pulmonologists, ENT, psychiatrists, psychiatrists, psychiatrists, neurologists) provide primary medical and dental care. In addition, there is the possibility for patients to perform free laboratory tests, through referrals to collaborating organizations. After the patients are monitored by the doctors of the Polyclinic, they are given the necessary medicines.
Within the operation of the Open Polyclinics, the Social service and the department of Psychological support are included.
The Social Service aims to address the social problems and difficulties of both the people who are hosted in the structures of Doctors of the World and those who are addressed to it through the Open Polyclinics. More specifically, the Social Service undertakes the collection of social history (recording of social data and requests of served), the provision of social support services, social counseling and support (informing of served about their rights and opportunities for access to the public health system and social assistance) and information on education, training and vocational guidance.
The Psychological Support department consists of volunteer psychologists and aims to provide psychological support and counseling to vulnerable social groups in the context of a targeted and short-term (6 months to 12) intervention.
The department is aimed at people who experience particularly difficult economic, social and psychological conditions (unemployment, social isolation, clinical disorders) and are either uninsured or unable to meet their needs from the ever-shrinking community mental health structures. They can also be immigrants or refugees / asylum seekers, political asylum seekers, who have been confronted with adverse and often extreme events (torture, abductions, terrorist and racist attacks) and face serious adjustment difficulties. Referral and consultation with a psychiatrist is often necessary.
The department also collaborates with a child psychiatrist with the aim of psychiatric assessment and monitoring of children and adolescents with developmental disorders and learning difficulties, while providing the possibility of counseling in the family.
To combat the Covid19 pandemic, visits to Polyclinics are by appointment.
