A three-part interactive talk on addictions took place at the MdM Shelter for the Homeless, with speakers being the volunteer psychologist Mr. Emmanouil Aikaterinidis, the psychology intern Ms. Yasemi Elena and the psychologist of the Shelter, Mr. Mihalis Matzaridis.
The first part, with Mr. Aikaterinidis as the main speaker, included, among other things, the diagnostic criteria (according to DSM-5) of addiction, the main types of addictions, the causes of the phenomenon and the differential diagnosis between addiction – dependence – mental disorder.
In the second part, a detailed report on the main effects of addictions on human life was given by Ms Yasemi, while in the third part, Mr. Matzaridis presented the more psychoanalytical approaches to addictions, with the main references to the initial trauma, the false self, the common axis of loss of freedom, the feeling of mental empowerment, so that the person can manage phenomena such as anxiety, the chaotic family or social environment, frustration or loneliness.
Finally, time was given to all the beneficiaries to either share their own experiences or ask clarifying questions or even suggest topics for future meetings.
As the interest of the beneficiaries was great, the speeches will be continued with other topics.
