The President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Médecins du Monde and “Dinner of Love” in a joint action, on Christmas Eve, approached people living without shelter in the wider area of Athens and Piraeus, in order to offer them practical help, continuing the support of our vulnerable people.

Hot meals, Covid-19 personal protective equipment and items for protection against the cold weather were distributed, while the pathologist and the social worker of Médecins du Monde’s Street Work team, provided primary health care, counselling and information about the pandemic to people who do not have systematic access to public information.

The meals were prepared by the chef of the Presidency of the Hellenic Republic, Vassilis Bekas, and were distributed to people in need. Mrs Sakellaropoulou was accompanied by the General Secretary for Social Solidarity and Fight Against Poverty, George Stamatis.

With her presence, the President of the Hellenic Republic makes it clear that people living without shelter are not invisible to the State, while the General Director of Médecins du Monde – Greece, Eugenia Thanou, noted “These are days of celebration and solidarity around the world, an opportunity to look next to us, to put aside our own problems and together we can help our fellow people who need us most. At the same time, however, we must not forget how important it is to stand by each other, taking care of and facing all problems together.”

Intervention in areas where homeless people are gathered is a regular and continuous action of Médecins du Monde, especially in recent years when the pandemic has caused additional difficulties in the living of vulnerable social groups. Médecins du Monde – Greece mission of  to be there where there are needs, wherever people are.
