During the press conference, the Presidents of the delegations of the International Network of Doctors of the World talked about the disturbing results of the economic crisis and the austerity measures for the EU, as well as their impact on the access to healthcare systems. At 2:00 pm, members of Doctors of the World from Greece, Germany, Belgium, Canada, Spain, France, Japan, Holland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States, presented a flashmob event at Monastiraki Square, trying to demonstrate their solidarity to vulnerable populations living in Greece. In a symbolic gesture, 30 pregnant women and 30 doctors, stood opposite each other and between them was a “chain” of 5 euro bills.

The austerity measures have a severe impact to all social protection nets and to the access to healthcare all over Europe. In Spain, undocumented migrants and destitute chronic patients can no longer cover the costs of healthcare. In Greece, the entire public healthcare system is under tremendous pressure. And several other Country Members have increased the percentage of out-of-pocket medical expenses that must be covered by patients. Vulnerable groups are the first victims of such politics.

As health professionals and in accordance with medical ethics, we refuse to exclude anyone, for reasons of legal / administrative status or lack of financial resources. We request the operation of public healthcare systems based on solidarity, equality and equity, accessible to all those living in the EU, especially the most vulnerable groups. We demand equal access to national immunization schedules and pediatric care for all. We demand that all pregnant women have equal access to pre and post natal care.
